DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING

Key Responsibilities

The Director of Manufacturing Engineering will be responsible for providing the leadership, expertise, and direction for all engineering operations. This individual will work closely with the President and the management team to develop and execute detailed strategic plans to achieve the organization’s ambitious goals.

Building on a culture of continuous improvement in our client’s manufacturing and business processes, the candidate will assist in strengthening its infrastructure, management team, and strategy development, which in turn, will lead to continued long-term growth & profitability – and attainment of our goal to become the “best in class” tooling supplier for our customers.

The initial focus of this role will be to evaluate our current manufacturing engineering team & processing approach and then to develop and implement strategies that will reduce current engineering cycle times and improve the process and documentation used by the shop to efficiently manufacture customer parts. In addition, this position will be responsible for the planning and execution of our capital investment strategy, working with shop supervisors to update both our technology and well as our capacity in order to support our overall business strategy.

Specific responsibilities will initially include:

  • Review and strengthen our current approach to processing customer parts and providing sufficient documentation, work instructions, and drawings for manufacturing operations to be both highly efficient as well as quality focused
  • Evaluate the manufacturing engineering team; hire, terminate and train engineering staff to strengthen our technology and support further growth
  • Continuously review production costs and product quality; recommend and manage initiatives to promote profitable operations
  • Focus on evaluating our current challenges and bottlenecks, recommend steps to improve deliveries and shorten lead times to meet our on-time delivery metrics
  • Evaluate, purchase, and supervise the installation of manufacturing and metrology equipment ensuring that our capital investment/cost reduction projects are completed on time and within budget; provide special emphasis on unattended machining and automation with these capital investments
  • Provide leadership, communication, and coaching to all team members
  • Interface with customers and vendors as needed to support business needs
  • Promote a quality culture that meets or exceeds our customer expectations, including maintaining the companies ISO Certification
  • Utilize knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma Best Practices, and other related contemporary quality systems, tools and processes to drive process and quality improvement across the organization

Skills & Experience

  • An individual who has a thorough understanding of engineering processes, shop floor management, production scheduling, quality practices, product costing, and supply chain operations
  • A leader who can generate instant credibility both within the organization and with external customers and partners; who has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels
  • An individual with a mindset based on identifying solutions rather than obstacles, one who is energized by consistently identifying and overcoming challenges, and possessing highly developed quantitative, as well as qualitative, skills, and who will work to drive change through the management and supervisory teams
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely
  • Someone who can multi-task effectively, balancing many tasks simultaneously
  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma and other operational tools
  • Proficient in MS Office and knowledge of MRP/ERP systems

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in engineering or a related technical field
  • Kaizen and/or Six Sigma certifications are a plus
