Job Description

Summary/Objective: Lead and deliver the creation of innovative consumer and customer driven new products, quality improvements, reformulations, and cost-savings to drive profitable growth. Provide technical leadership on cross-functional teams to support operations, sales, purchasing, quality, and other internal and external partners.

• Sample Develop (Lift 50lbs)
• Troubleshoot & Solve Plant Issues. Perform Bench-Exp. Tests using Math & Percent Equations.
• Create Formula Cards or Raw Material Specifications. ID UMAs.
• Operate Process Pro to Enter Ingredients & Formula BOM
• Create Packaging Formula Cards & FPRs.
• Audit Data & Repair Existing Formula Cards or Raw Material Specification Sheets.

• Technical-leadership role in identifying and creating innovative new products and platforms that are aligned to the overall strategy through developing and fostering internal and external partnerships.
• Technical-leadership role on projects with moderate to high complexity, such as major cost-initiatives, line-extensions, and new-development while working closely with key business partners to define product requirements, develop project timelines, cost/margin goals, risks, and contingency plans.
• Translate consumer/customer needs into relevant product-designs while meeting consumer, cost, quality, and regulatory requirements from ideation through commercialization.
• Practice specification ownership and build stable formulations with proprietary advantage where applicable to protect investments and block competitive potential.
• Actively partner with external suppliers and development-companies to identify, test, and integrate new opportunities including, but not limited to, new technologies and new raw materials.
• Demonstrate a strong, technical and business understanding of the competitive industry, supplier base, and emerging technology on and off premise practices, as well as trends and other external changes that could influence industry and product direction. Proactively bring forward new ideas from this learning for business plans and to drive new idea potential.
• Available to work overtime including weekend 
• Comply with all safety and SOP procedures
• Support internal/external plant startups & provide technical support as directed or situation warrants.
• Co-maintain organization and presence of Lab, Ingredient Cabinets, and Bench top setting.
• Work with Urgency (to meet timelines).
• Work with Attention to detail.
• Communicate proactively and promptly (the receipt of an email, your plan, and your activity). Communicate outgoing samples (so Sales and others may coordinate accordingly). Avoid No-news is good-news approach.

Work Environment
This job operates in an office and lab environment. This role routinely uses lab equipment and standard office equipment such as computers, calculators, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

Essential Functions Mathematics
Apply knowledge of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques such as differential and integral calculus, factor analysis, and probability determination, or work with a wide variety of theoretical mathematical concepts and make original applications of mathematical procedures, as in empirical and differential equations

Expression of a level to communicate fluently with employees, customers, and others in English to obtain and provide complex information. Vocalize and explain detailed data and problem-solve, both in-person and by telephone. Capable of interpretation of technical materials, oral presentation of reports and able to adapt vocabulary, tone and content for listener.

Comprehension and expression of a level to routinely draft narrative information, compose routine correspondence on own initiative, make comprehensive notes. May involve a large volume of such composition.

Physical Demands

Employee will occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, carry up to 15 pounds, and walk. Employee will frequently lift up to 15 pounds, and be able to distinguish basic colors and shades of color. Employee will continuously stand, read with attention to detail, seeing activities near and far, be ability to smell and have routine hearing abilities.

Employee will occasionally work irregular hour, work with sharp objects, work around machinery and moving parts, work on ladders and work closely with others. Employee will frequently be exposed to dust, and silica, asbestos, etc. Employee will continuously work inside, and work alone. 

Moderate travel required - ability to travel occasionally (i.e., quarterly) for activities such as out-of-town meetings, training sessions or to travel to other facilities.

Required Education, Skills and Experience
• Minimum B.S Food Science or related technical or engineering degree preferred with 2-4 years’ experience, or M.S. degree with 1-2 years’ experience.
• Minimum 2 years work experience in R&D, Food Manufacturing, Beverage, Flavor, or Pharmaceutical industry. 
• Proven success working autonomously plus engaging and presenting ideas and/or facts.
• Ability and proven success developing strong cross-functional relationships within R&D as well as with Sales, Operations, Purchasing, Maintenance, etc. to drive strong collaboration and results.
• Proficient skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and related programs for organizing data, summarizing test results, and presentation of data.
• Must be able to consume and sample food ingredients and allergens in accordance with evaluation/research needs.
• Must have good ability to make objective taste and texture decisions about products. 
• Physically fit for work primarily in a lab, pilot plant and manufacturing environments, which includes long periods of standing, moving, and carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Acute attention to detail.
• Team player with collaborative style and strong listening and partnering skills. 
• Ability to work independently and lead planning, development, timing, and execution of assigned projects.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Strong working knowledge of lab-operating procedures. Experience in promoting the interaction of related R&D disciplines such as sensory, process engineering, packaging development.
